October Blog 2023

September came to an end beautifully with the village hall abuzz with chatter and everyone enjoying the Harvest Supper together.  With many thanks to all those who had made delicious plates and dishes of food and helped in any way.  A great evening.

1st October was welcomed in by Deane’s Harvest Evensong at 6.00pm.  The Benefice choir had been invited, which was excellent.  We stayed after the service enabling us to catch up with friends and enjoy the delicious nibbles and wine.  Thank you so much.

The Book group met at Shona’s on Friday 13th with 13 of us, how amazing was that!!  Thank you so much Shona for hosting, also to Marilyn and Valerie for providing delicious cake and flapjacks to enjoy with coffee.  We were also able to have lots of cuddles with gorgeous Olive, a special treat.  Eventually, after much laughter and catching up, a lively discussion got underway!  “Bats in the Belfry” by E.C.R. Lorac.  A well constructed murder mystery, if somewhat slow and at times, hard going.  A score of 5.6 was given.

Saturday morning, 14th, in the village hall, Amanda had invited the participants of her Psychology Thesis study to share the results over coffee & cake.  ‘Does square breathing have a beneficial effect on  memory’ Absolutely brilliant, well done Amanda, so very complex yet so informative.  We learnt also that the study confirms previous research that has shown that a period of waking-rest after learning is beneficial to memory recall.  So the odd cat-nap is a must!!  This is soon to be published in a scientific journal.

Saturday 21st in the village hall ‘Breakfast Together’ was enjoyed by all over bacon baps, croissants and coffee.  This was followed by a presentation given by The Children’s Society represented by Nick Young.  A brilliant speaker, such a shame to have missed it.

Tuesday 24th in the afternoon, a jolly group met at Oak Lodge for a service led by Rev. Tim.  The lounge was full and many voices could be heard joining the well known hymns, great choices.

Singing in the village hall is in full swing, with the odd song getting underway for the Panto!   ‘Snow White and the ?  The cast has all been decided upon and rehearsals have begun in the village hall and at home!  So, put the dates in your diary folks.  February 28th, 29th and March 1st and 2nd 2024.

It is the most miserable of days, dark and wet, though we have been blessed with some beautiful days.  Many a gorgeous sunrise and sunset.  The owls can be heard early morning and those lucky enough have seen them at night.  Wonderful displays by the jackdaws and crows, one minute swooping one way then disappearing as they turn sharply to then be a mass of black in the other direction.  Quite incredible to watch.  One day all we could hear was the loud swishing overheard, only to watch in amazement as a lone sway flew just above the tree line above us, stunning.  The birds are starting to feed in readiness for the winter ahead, colours are changing beautifully all around.  Unfortunately all the dahlias have been taken by the heavy frost the other week, so sad as many buds still to have burst forth.  Runner beans still managed to hang on under the protection of their leaves.  My fruit is at last soaking in brandy in preparation of the Christmas cake soon to be wafting delicious smells around the kitchen.  That time of the year once again.  Looks like we will be lighting the fire again tonight, so very cosy and I’m sure the start of many to come!
