June Blog 2024

This has been a very quiet month of activities in the village!!  Soon to make up for it, as on Saturday 22nd there is Breakfast Together, also on the same day, the Regency Day at Alton, which a few of the villagers are involved in.  In costume maybe?  Then of course on Sunday 23rd the Village Fête, a brilliant full weekend.  Plus, which is amazing, the weather looks good! Fingers crossed.

Thursday morning on 6th June, Steventon Singers joined Karen at Oak Lodge for a rousing Sing-a-long with the residents.  All the old favourites, plus a few of our own.  ‘Barbara Ann’ being one of them, that of course many knew and joined in.  As one lovely lady said, it took us back years, like it used to be.   A very enjoyable morning with plenty of chatter afterwards.  We look forward to the next one.

Friday 14th Book Group met at Rosina’s, thank you for hosting, delicious coffee and cake, also to Chris.  Many fellow book readers were away, so only a small group were able to attend, however, I’m sure there was plenty of fun and chatter as always.  The book discussed was “Small Pleasures” by Clare Chambers.  Briefly it is about a young woman, Gretchen Tilbury, who contacts the paper in the late 1950’s, to claim that her daughter is the result of a virgin birth, it is down to Jean to discover whether she is a miracle or a fraud!  A score of 6 overall was given.

Coffee & Cake was held on Monday 17th in the village hall.  Thank you to Anita, Chris and Linda for delicious cakes and coffee.  Sadly, there was only a small gathering as many on holiday etc, however, still very enjoyable to sit and chat, put the world to rights! then amble back to enjoy being in the garden yet again.  Long may it continue…..Is summer really here at last?  Everywhere is looking lovely, elderflowers wafting their gorgeous perfume when we walk by them, cordial or champagne maybe?  There have been so very many young blue-tits, goldfinches and chaffinches being fed by the parents, a joy to behold, gradually the adults are now leaving them to fend for themselves.  The female pheasant, guarded very closely by the cock bird, who is looking magnificent in his bright plumage, come every day to be fed and are quite happy for us to come close.  The owl has been seen every day, sometimes morning and evening.  During the day they are beautiful but at night they are magnificent, a silent and powerful ghostly figure in the countryside, hunting for food.  Nature at it’s most stunning.  I guess we will see less of it soon as the young eventually fledge.  Also, the cuckoo has been heard this year, a classic sound of summer!

Well, I guess many of us will be making cakes, getting things organized for the weekends festivities, many jobs to be undertaken by so many villagers to make this weekend the success it always is.   Do hope many of you will be able to join us, look forward to seeing you.  However, now, the main thought of the day is do we have a Bar-B-Q or not?   Mike is just finishing the mowing, so perhaps a decision to make over a good cup of tea.
