March 2026 Blog

How much longer and lighter the days are seeming now, even better soon with the clocks springing forward on the 29th, wonderful.  A  reasonably quiet time in the village this month.  However, in the village hall, on Sunday 8th, Steventon Singers held a wonderful afternoon with Song, tea and of course Cake!!  This was in all in aid of ‘Forever Singing’ a memory choir which is a fully volunteer-led, independent organisation, which seeks to provide opportunities for any who may be facing some life changes in all aspects of life.   Also just for the joy of singing.  We all know how powerful and uplifting singing can be, also fun!!  As they say, ‘The only thing better than singing, is more singing’ !!  Marvellous to see so many there, a grand total of £220 was raised in donations for this brilliant organisation.  Well done Marilyn and Paul for all your encouragement and great fun on our Tuesday evenings.

Friday 13th and Book Group.  A very special meeting this month as we all met at Ashcombe House, Basingstoke.  We have heard such good comments from Chris, as dear John is now a resident, that is was just great to be invited.  As it was World Women’s Day, the book group had been invited to hold it at Ashcombe House and to be treated to a buffet lunch.  Firstly, we all had to see the gorgeous baby ducklings that had hatched out only a few days before.  They were so used to being handled, quite lovely time wasters!  We have since heard they are now swimming and diving very happily, just awaiting to be taken to their forever home soon.  We did actually get round to discussing the book, ‘Still Life’ by Sarah Winman.  A sweeping, heart warming novel spanning decades, beginning with a chance encounter between a young British soldier (Ulysses Temper) and an older art historian (Evelyn Skinner in wartime Tuscany in 1944. A score of 8 overall was given.  After tearing ourselves away from yet another viewing of the ducklings, we all left Ashcombe House with the knowledge of it being such a warm, personal environment that feels like a ‘home from home’ which is so wonderful for all involved.

Monday 16th Coffee & Cake in the village hall.  As soon as Paracise had finished, tables and chairs were quickly arranged and before long the delicious aroma of coffee greeted everyone as they came through the doors.  Soon a buzz of chatter filled the air, cake soon disappeared, also Chris had made small, delicious frittatas, all very delicious.  Thank you Sally, Chris, Barbara and myself!!

Lovely new tables to use now, great size, provided by the village hall committee, brilliant.  Thank you from everyone.

A big Welcome back to the village Nixie, Peter, and family at Quintans, it must be so wonderful after all this time now building work has been completed.  Also a belated welcome to Jack, Lauren and their dog Curly now living at the Old School House.  What a huge difference you have made already, we can see your lovely home now!!  May you be very happy in this wonderful village of Steventon.

Well, the grass has been mowed, the garden weeded, all ready for planting with the warmer days to come, or one hopes!  The buds are trying their best to burst forth, daffodils, celandines, forget-me-nots and bluebells are out and coming out in flower, fabulous, spring has sprung.  Some amazingly, beautiful sunsets and sunrises have adorned the sky.  This week also, the sun is supposed to shine for days!!  We shall see, let’s hope so.  We will enjoy it while we can, even lunch outside, which was brilliant the other day.  Enjoy.
