September Blog 2023

Great to be back into the swing of things starting with Tuesday 2nd and singing in the village hall.  Voices could be heard also on the 12th as we all joyously sang those we knew, plus a few we did not.  This always keeps us on our toes adding to the enjoyment, also, I believe a few songs might be in anticipation of the village Panto next year!!!  Next singing evening is on Tuesday 3rd October 7.30.  Would be great if any of you could join us, always fun, never boring.

Friday 8th September the Book Group met at Rosina’s house, or rather in the garden on the new patio.  A beautiful morning, flowers all around us, delightful.  Many thanks Rosina, a lovely morning and so very good to see everyone.  Delicious apple cake made by Susie and Amelia’s yummy flap jacks, thank you to you both.  Perfect with a good cup of coffee.  We did eventually discuss the book!  “The Midnight Library” by Mall Haig.  Mixed reviews, but mostly enjoyed by all.  A score of 8 overall was given.

Monday 18th and the village Coffee Moring was all in aid of MACMILLAN Cancer Support, held in the village hall.  Tremendous morning and at the very end, any cake left was sliced and boxed up for a donation, taken away by happy people.  Well done Chris & Rosina for organizing the event and to all those who made such delicious contributions and helped in any way.  A brilliant amount of £545 was raised for this amazing charity.  Superb.

Friday 22nd arrived and by 9.30am all the flower ladies had arrived with gorgeous flowers and greenery to decorate our very special church for the Harvest Celebration service.  Lots of chatter amongst smiling faces, coffee provided by Emma accompanied by delicious flap jacks, thank you Emma.  Soon the church was once again transformed with colour for harvest, along with the fragrance that could just be detected, gorgeous.

The Harvest Celebration service on Sunday 24th was wonderful as there were lots of families and children, so very special, with lots of catching up and chatter.  Paul had just made it from playing at Old Basing service, he is amazing, Sharon had rushed from North Waltham Harvest service to join the choir. Such a lot of smiling faces and chatter we were late starting, however, after a lovely service taken by Rev. Tim, we were all able to carry on catching up over coffee & delicious buns, with thanks to Barbara and Marilyn.  A lovely amount and variety of tins etc. were brought along and placed under the small alter for the Basingstoke Food Bank.  These were delivered to the Basingstoke Food Bank warehouse on Monday, a total of 44kg, brilliant.  Thank you Tim and Linda for delivering.

Tuesday 26th in the evening, a jolly group arrived in the village hall, gathered around in a large circle.  Susie, our director, arrived shortly before Charlie burst through the door to hear a chorus of Happy Birthday sung to him.  We were there to hear about the Panto so with Charlie’s wonderful personality, we were all inspired with much excitement!  Good to see a few new faces wanting to take part.  Can’t say too much at the moment, however, will be just as brilliant, or as we say, ‘will be alright on the night’!!  Before then, lots of rehearsals in store.  A meeting of Steventon Players followed to discuss forthcoming events, amongst other matters arising.

Yoga has resumed with Amanda in the village hall on Wednesday mornings, also Paracise on Monday mornings at 9.15 with Bethan Buchanan.

Wonderful, wonderful news, Tony is home, after a long 7 months away after his operation. So fantastic to see him walking slowly with a huge smile on his face, through the village along with the lovely Erica. Stopping for a chat with any of us that are lucky enough to be outside. See you at singing next week, Tony. Love from everyone.

So here we are, October almost upon us.  The garden having done well despite the hot weather.  The outside cucumbers have produced such a large crop just from two plants, the last few producing some very peculiar shapes and sizes!  Flowers and shrubs giving us continuous colour, as it has everywhere, it seems.  Families of birds in abundance, though there are three robins still sorting out their territories without a care about us sitting very so close to them.  There have been the most amazing numbers of geese that we have been so lucky to see flying in at sunset to land in Jeremy’s railway field.  Also, to witness this remarkable scene as they take off in the mornings up and over the railway for their day elsewhere.  Wonderful.  I also noticed on my walk today, branches full of large sloes, just asking to be picked!  Sloe gin in the making.  Getting to be that time of the year again.  Off to make a cuppa now as Mike has just finished cutting the hedge.
